Lisbon in 3 Days: Alfama, Baixa and Belém

A Lisbon itinerary that accounts for the hills, with old neighbourhoods, riverside breaks and a separate Belém day.

How to use this itinerary

This 3-day Lisbon itinerary is designed for a first visit with geographically coherent days. It assumes full sightseeing days; remove a block if arrival or departure takes half a day. The sequence is editorial advice, not an operator schedule. Place your principal booking first and protect time for meals and rest. Several options below are alternatives, not a requirement to complete everything.

Day 1: Baixa and Chiado

Use the first morning to understand Baixa. Starting near Praça do Comércio and moving into the streets helps you connect the river with the centre. After lunch, continue towards Chiado, allowing for slopes rather than reading a short map distance as an effortless walk. Make a bookshop or café stop part of the day. Return towards the water in the evening only if you still have energy.

Day 2: slow down in Alfama

A few viewpoints and short street walks make a sufficient framework for Alfama. If entering Castelo de São Jorge is important, check access and make it the main morning activity. Allow a long lunch afterwards, remembering the steps and uneven surfaces. For an evening of fado, establish the programme, meal requirements and total price before booking. Keep voices and photographs considerate in residential streets rather than treating the neighbourhood as a stage.

Day 3: give Belém its own block

Do not squeeze Belém into a spare lunch hour in the centre. Check the current opening status of your chosen institution and select one main visit, then combine the Jerónimos area with riverside time. Mark an alternative to a bakery queue rather than leaving the whole afternoon dependent on it. Keep Sintra for a separate day on a longer trip. On departure day, plan luggage collection and the airport connection first.

Accommodation and the hills

When comparing Baixa with higher neighbourhoods, look beyond the view. Research the luggage approach, lift access and night-time noise. Alfama may appeal for atmosphere, but repeated stair climbs do not suit everyone. Compare metro, bus and tram options against your actual days. Riding a particular famous tram is optional: if the queue is long or conditions uncomfortable, use another verified connection and spend the saved time exploring.

Budget and a wet-weather alternative

Separate accommodation, airport travel, chosen admissions and food before comparing city cards. Attractions you would not otherwise visit are not savings. In rain, shorten steep outdoor sections and make room for a museum whose opening status you have verified. With only two days, choose your priorities between Belém and an extended Alfama visit rather than rushing both. Keep a small flexible allowance for transport when tired legs change the walking plan.

Official source and final checks

Use the official Visit Lisboa guide for destination research. Confirm fares, schedules, accessibility and temporary closures directly with the relevant institution or operator before travel. This article does not guarantee prices or uninterrupted access. Save your hotel address, main booking and return connection offline, and agree on a meeting point with companions. Shorten the route for your own needs, especially with children or mobility requirements.
