How to use this itinerary
This 3-day Lyon itinerary is designed for a first visit with geographically coherent days. It assumes full sightseeing days; remove a block if arrival or departure takes half a day. The sequence is editorial advice, not an operator schedule. Place your principal booking first and protect time for meals and rest. Several options below are alternatives, not a requirement to complete everything.
Day 1: take Vieux Lyon slowly
Connect the Saône waterfront with the streets of Vieux Lyon on the first morning. Choose one main visit and a proper lunch instead of rushing between photographs. For traboules, use routes explicitly open to visitors: an unlocked residential door is not permission to enter. Keep dinner nearby so the first day does not end with an unnecessary journey back and forth across the city.
Day 2: Fourvière and the return downhill
Choose the approach to Fourvière according to your walking capacity. If using the funicular, check current operation, and do not automatically assume a stepped walk down suits everyone. Allow unhurried time for the basilica and views. A gentler riverside afternoon can work better than another major museum. In rain, shorten steep paths and steps rather than trying to follow the original walking plan regardless of conditions.
Day 3: Presqu’île and an art choice
Build the Presqu’île day around squares, streets and one selected interior. If choosing the Musée des Beaux-Arts, review exhibitions and opening days; shopping and a museum need different time budgets. Adding Croix-Rousse requires its own journey and allowance for slopes. On departure day, omit that addition and choose a final meal near a convenient luggage-collection route rather than ending with a complicated connection.
Match accommodation to your meal plans
Compare Presqu’île and Vieux Lyon beyond atmosphere: check luggage access, lifts and evening noise. Review menus and reservation conditions before committing to a restaurant. If one dinner is your main splurge, keep other meals flexible. For a two-day stay, remove the separate shopping and art block rather than compressing the entire itinerary into shorter visits. Location savings should be measured in time as well as room price.
Official source and final checks
Use the official Lyon Tourist Office guide for destination research. Confirm fares, schedules, accessibility and temporary closures directly with the relevant institution or operator before travel. This article does not guarantee prices or uninterrupted access. Save your hotel address, main booking and return connection offline, and agree on a meeting point with companions. Shorten the route for your own needs, especially with children or mobility requirements.
