How to use this itinerary

This 3-day Madrid itinerary is designed for a first visit with geographically coherent days. It assumes full sightseeing days; remove a block if arrival or departure takes half a day. The sequence is editorial advice, not an operator schedule. Place your principal booking first and protect time for meals and rest. Several options below are alternatives, not a requirement to complete everything.

Day 1: Sol to the palace area

Start around Puerta del Sol and walk towards Plaza Mayor. After pausing in the squares, continue towards the palace area; make an interior visit the main booking if it interests you. Keep a lunch alternative rather than relying on one popular market. A short La Latina walk can follow in the evening. If arriving that morning, consider a lighter orientation day instead of a demanding palace visit.

Day 2: one major museum and Retiro

Choose the Prado, Reina Sofía or Thyssen according to the collection you want to see. Rather than visiting all three, protect a long lunch after your main visit. Adjust a Retiro walk to the weather and your energy. Read the institution’s terms for temporary exhibitions and general collections. Looking carefully at selected rooms can be more rewarding than rushing through every gallery on a short trip.

Day 3: Malasaña and Conde Duque

Spend the final day around Malasaña and Conde Duque with cafés, smaller shops and street exploration. Keep the pace relaxed instead of treating it as a shopping deadline. Add one exhibition if its current programme interests you. A trip outside Madrid, such as Toledo, replaces this day rather than attaching to it. On a flight day, establish luggage collection and the airport connection before filling the remaining time.

Accommodation, transport and budget

Compare a central base around Sol with a direct metro connection farther out. Noise and the actual station-to-hotel walk may matter more than room photographs. Verify airport ticket conditions separately from local products. Prioritise your museum, palace and food choices before comparing passes. In heat or rain, reduce exposed walking and allow longer breaks rather than keeping every outdoor stop simply because it is on the list.

Official source and final checks

Use the official Madrid Tourism guide for destination research. Confirm fares, schedules, accessibility and temporary closures directly with the relevant institution or operator before travel. This article does not guarantee prices or uninterrupted access. Save your hotel address, main booking and return connection offline, and agree on a meeting point with companions. Shorten the route for your own needs, especially with children or mobility requirements.
