Planning a Multi-City Train Trip Around Days, Not Connections
It is easy to connect cities on a railway map and harder to give each one meaningful time.

Where to start
It is easy to connect cities on a railway map and harder to give each one meaningful time. A moving day includes leaving the hotel and settling into another, not simply riding a train. Fewer cities can deepen the trip without removing variety. Start by deciding what each stop contributes before searching for connections.
Give every stop a purpose
Write why each city belongs in the trip. Being on the line does not automatically justify an overnight stay. Give longer to places matching your interests and save others for another journey. Count the repeated packing burden created by many short stays.
Confirm the actual stations
Cities may have multiple stations, and arrival and onward departure need not use the same one. Check hotel access to both. Distinguish similar names carefully when searching. A late arrival also requires checking the final local connection rather than only the intercity service.
Understand connection uncertainty
Consider platform changes, luggage and mobility on connecting journeys. Do not assume separate tickets provide identical disruption arrangements; read the relevant operators’ terms. Planning to reach a critical event on the last possible service can turn a minor delay into a major problem.
Keep moving days lighter
Food and a short neighbourhood walk may be enough after arrival. A long booked visit before room access can complicate luggage arrangements. Leave time for laundry, rest and unplanned discoveries during the trip. Travel between cities should connect experiences rather than become the sole objective.
Action checklist
Before deciding, complete these four checks for your own trip. Confirm unresolved questions with the relevant property or provider. Examples illustrate a planning method; they are not guarantees about a particular service’s price, access or reservation terms.
