How to use this itinerary
This 2-day Salzburg itinerary is designed for a first visit with geographically coherent days. It assumes full sightseeing days; remove a block if arrival or departure takes half a day. The sequence is editorial advice, not an operator schedule. Place your principal booking first and protect time for meals and rest. Several options below are alternatives, not a requirement to complete everything.
Day 1: old town and one museum
Spend the morning around the old-town squares and Getreidegasse. For a Mozart-focused museum, check which building your ticket covers rather than treating different venues as one visit. Protect a proper café or meal break. Group the first day’s stops on one side of the river instead of crossing for a single photograph and immediately returning. Deliberate crossings simplify the route without removing the views.
Give the fortress its own block
Plan Hohensalzburg using the approach, admission and sections you want to see together. Match the ascent to your walking capacity and the weather. If the museum takes longer, move the fortress to the next day rather than racing two major visits against closing time. Consider conditions in exposed viewpoints. Finish with dinner somewhere easy to reach instead of ending the day with another demanding climb.
Day 2: Mirabell and the river
Begin more slowly around Mirabell. Garden access and palace interiors are different questions, so check what visitors may enter. A riverside walk and lunch can follow. For a concert, inspect the actual programme, venue and ticket conditions. A visit to Salzburg does not automatically need a distant lake excursion. Two days spent understanding the city can be more satisfying than using half the stay in transit.
Hotels, event dates and rain
Compare accommodation by old-town atmosphere, river crossings and the station approach. Events on your actual dates can change demand and prices, so avoid relying on a generic low-season assumption. In rain, shorten gardens and use one verified indoor alternative. Count only open, realistically achievable visits when evaluating a city card. For an early train, allow time for breakfast and collecting luggage before leaving the hotel.
Official source and final checks
Use the official Tourismus Salzburg guide for destination research. Confirm fares, schedules, accessibility and temporary closures directly with the relevant institution or operator before travel. This article does not guarantee prices or uninterrupted access. Save your hotel address, main booking and return connection offline, and agree on a meeting point with companions. Shorten the route for your own needs, especially with children or mobility requirements.
